ISLAMIC, Caucasus (Pre-Seljuq). Sallarids. Sharmazan ibn Mishki, circa AH 355-360 / AD 966-971. Dirham (Silver, 30 mm, 4.95 g, 8 h), Ardabil, AH 361 = 971/2. Citing Rukn al-Dawla Abu ʿAli Buwayh (AH 338-366 / AD 949-977) as overlord on the obverse, and the ʿAbbasid caliph al-Mutiʿ lillah (AH 334-363 / AD 946-974) on the reverse. ‘lā ilāha illā / Allāh waḥdahū / lā sharīka lahū / Rukn al-Dawla / Abū ʿAlī Buwayh’ (‘There is no deity but Allah, the One, there is no partner to Him. Rukn al-Dawla Abu ʿAli Buwayh’ in Arabic); in the margin, ‘bism Allāh ḍuriba hādhā al-dirham bi Ardabīl sana iḥdā wa sittīn wa thalātha miʾa’ (‘In the name of Allah. This dirham was struck in Ardabil in the year 361’ in Arabic); very weak traces of an outer marginal legend.. Rev. ‘li-llāh / Muḥammad / rasūl Allāh / al-Muṭīʿ lillāh / al-Nāṣir Abū al-Qāsim / Sharmazan ibn Mishakī’ (‘To Allah.
